Myth Monday: Botox vs. Fillers – What’s the Difference?
Every week at BODi Louisville Medical Spa, we take a moment to clear up some of the most common myths in aesthetics and skincare. One of the most frequent questions we hear from clients is: “Are Botox and fillers the same thing?” At first glance, it’s easy to see why people might confuse them—they’re both injectable treatments, they both help reduce visible signs of aging, and they’re both performed in medical spas. But the truth is, Botox and fillers are two very different treatments designed to target different concerns.
Let’s break it down.
What Botox Does
Botox is a neuromodulator, which means it works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that create wrinkles from repeated facial expressions. For example, when you raise your eyebrows, frown, or squint, your muscles contract and form lines on the skin’s surface. Over time, these lines can deepen and become more noticeable. Botox works by interrupting the signal between your nerves and those facial muscles, allowing the skin above them to smooth out. Common treatment areas include forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines between the brows. The result is a softer, more refreshed look—without changing your natural expressions.
What Fillers Do
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used to restore or add volume. As we age, our skin loses collagen, elastin, and fat, which leads to sagging, hollow cheeks, thin lips, and deeper folds around the nose and mouth. Fillers are made of gel-like substances, most commonly hyaluronic acid, that are injected beneath the skin to plump, lift, and contour. They can enhance lips, define the jawline, fill in smile lines, or even improve under-eye hollows. Unlike Botox, fillers don’t affect muscle movement; they simply replace lost volume and provide structure where it’s needed most.
Why People Confuse Them
Both Botox and fillers are quick, non-surgical, and minimally invasive treatments that deliver immediate and noticeable results. They’re also often used together in what’s known as a “liquid facelift”—a combination approach that addresses both wrinkles caused by movement and volume loss from aging. However, while they complement each other beautifully, they are not the same.

So, is the statement “Botox and fillers are the same thing” true or false? The answer is FALSE. Each treatment has its own unique purpose, and understanding the difference is the first step toward choosing the right option for your goals.
